I’m Barkat Walji, a qualified Solicitor and Accountant, and one of the original trustees who helped establish the Lion Gym & Boxing Club.
My role within the charity focuses on policy and public affairs, with particular responsibility for financial matters—including tax, banking, and accounting. It’s been a privilege to support the gym’s growth and ensure we remain financially sound and well-governed.
I was born in Tanzania, East Africa, and as a teenager, I explored various career paths. I chose to train as an Accountant and am now a fellow member of two professional accountancy bodies here in the UK. But my desire to help people led me to pursue a second profession—as a Solicitor.
After studying at Huddersfield University, I began my legal career as a Trainee Solicitor in Sheffield. I qualified and was admitted to the Roll of Solicitors on 15th September 2003, later becoming an Associate Solicitor. Throughout my legal career, I focused on Wills and Probate, Family Law, and Civil Litigation—areas that allowed me to support people through some of life’s most challenging moments.
Now semi-retired from legal practice, I enjoy having more time to spend with my family. I’ve always had a natural rapport with people of all ages, particularly the elderly. That patience and attention to detail—which some have called pedantic—served me well in areas of law that require care, precision, and empathy.
Though I’m a bit old school, I’ve always believed that the best form of recommendation is a client returning—or sending a friend, colleague or neighbour my way. That’s how trust is built, and it’s how I’ve approached all my work—whether in the legal field or through the gym.
Being part of the Lion Gym & Boxing Club from the very beginning has been incredibly fulfilling. It’s a cause close to my heart, and I’m proud to continue supporting its mission.
